What If Summer Didn’t Wreck Your Budget This Year?
Summer is supposed to be fun and full of pool days, vacations, cookouts, concerts, road trips, camps for the kids, and iced coffee runs just because. But if you’re anything like most people I coach, summer doesn’t just stretch your time… it stretches your wallet too. Sometimes to the point of snapping.
The pressure to “make the most of it” can leave you with a blurry mix of sweet memories and bitter regret when the bills start rolling in. So let me ask you something that might feel radical:
What if this was the summer that didn’t wreck your budget?
Not because you skipped all the fun.
Not because you locked yourself inside.
But because you actually planned for the fun instead of just reacting to it.
Let’s talk about what that can look like and how it’s 100% possible for you.
1. Decide What Matters Most This Summer
You don’t need to do everything. You just need to do what matters most.
Before summer activities pile onto your calendar (and your checking account), take a moment to get clear on your yeses. Ask yourself:
-
What memories do I really want to create this year?
-
What do I want my kids (or myself) to look back on in August and smile about?
-
What will give us joy without draining us financially?
Circle those things. Let everything else be optional. When you know your priorities, it becomes easier to say no to the rest without guilt.
2. Create a “Summer Fun” Budget Before You Swipe
Most people budget for bills. Few people budget for life. That’s where the stress creeps in.
If you already know you'll need extra for things like weekend getaways, summer camps, backyard upgrades, or an extra tank of gas for spontaneous day trips then build it in on purpose. Create a separate line item or mini fund just for summer fun.
Even if it’s only $25 a week, that intentional move gives you permission to enjoy without anxiety trailing behind every purchase.
3. Make Room Without Cutting All Joy
This isn’t about stripping your summer down to rice and beans. Having fun in the summer has always been a priority for our family. But you have to make space for the fun.
Can you cut out the mindless spending that isn’t serving you?
Can you pause one subscription for the next three months to free up cash?
Can you shift your grocery habits just slightly to create $100 of margin?
These small intentional shifts are how you protect your summer and your peace.
4. Get Creative with Free (or Low-Cost) Fun
You don’t need a Disney-level budget to create magical moments. Some of the best memories come from simplicity:
-
Backyard movie nights with string lights and popcorn
-
Dollar-store water balloon fights
-
Local library summer programs
-
Free concerts or farmer’s markets
-
Hosting a potluck BBQ instead of eating out
-
Backyard bonfire with s’mores—bonus points if you swap the Hershey bar for a Reese’s cup (trust me, it’s a game-changer).
When you stop measuring your summer against everyone else’s Instagram highlight reel, something shifts. You realize that joy doesn’t have to be expensive, it just has to be intentional. Focus on what matters most to you and your family, not what social media says you “should” be doing. And chances are, the friends you invite along will be grateful you’re not adding one more pricey event to their already stretched summer budget.
5. Stop the Cycle—Start the Shift
You don’t have to keep ending every summer with a drained bank account and a sinking feeling. When you shift from reactive spending to proactive planning, everything changes.
Summer can be full of sunshine, laughter, and freedom—not financial stress. But that freedom doesn’t come from chance. It comes from choosing to steward your money with clarity and confidence.
